• Introduction to VCF

The Foundation for the Conservation of Bearded Vultures (FCBV) and the Black Vulture Conservation Foundation (BVCF) are merge to create the new VULTURE CONSERVATION FOUNDATION (VCF)

For thirty years now, the Foundation for Conservation of Bearded Vultures (FCBV) and the Black Vulture Conservation Foundation (BVCF) are committed to the conservation of vultures in Europe. Both organizations have gained extraordinary successes in breeding, reintroduction and conservation of vultures in their original habitats. But the success would never have been possible without strong collaboration with so many organizations like Protected Area’s Administration, Non Governmental Organizations, Governmental Organizations and nature conservationists.

Looking back at the past thirty years, we can proudly list some outstanding results:

  •  Establishment of a pioneer captive breeding programme for Bearded vultures and Black vultures, leading to large numbers of offspring for release into the wild
  • Reintroduction of Bearded vultures to the whole Alpine region; from where this species disappeared in the second half of the 19th century
  • Recovery of the Black Vulture on the island of Majorca, the last island population of this species in the world
  • Reintroduction of Black vultures in Catalonia and southern French Alps, where this species became extinct in the late 19th century
  • Reintroduction of vultures in Sardinia and Bearded vultures in Andalusia
  • Development and implementation of the Balkan Vulture Action Plan, including the translocation of Griffon vultures to the Balkan mountains and actions for all four vulture species in the entire Balkan region
  • The fight against the illegal use of poison in Spain and the launch of a European Secretariat against this serious conservation problem on the continent
  • Development of outreach campaigns and environmental education throughout Europe
  • Strengthening Environmental Conservation Organisations and local authorities in the important countries with vulture populations
  •
Nevertheless, we are facing major challenges for the future. In different countries we still experience old threats to birds of prey such as illegal use of poison or direct persecution, loss of breeding habitat and food resources as well as more recent problems such as electrocution at power lines, the ecological unsound development of mountain ecosystems by wind turbines, and new upcoming infectious diseases. We are recording a dramatic population decline of Egyptian vultures in the Mediterranean region but also on their migration routes and wintering habitats in Africa.

Considering these facts and looking at the future, we want to combine our forces as much as possible to optimize human, technical and financial resources, to create the most favourable conditions for vultures in Europe and throughout the world.

All your contacts with FCBV or BVCF will be coordinated by VCF. Richard Zink is available for the IBM database. Hans Frey oversees the Bearded Vulture breeding network, and is supported by Alex Llopis Dell. Rafael Heredia, as a member of the newly created advisory committee, keeps track of the Pyrenean population of this species. Evelyn Tewes and Juan José Sánchez Artés will continue to support and coordinate all activities related to the Black Vulture, and the Balkan Vulture Action Plan. Juan José Sánchez Artés stays at your disposal for all issues regarding the illegal use of poison, Jesús Garzón Heydt can answer all questions related to pastoralism, the recovery of native breeds and transhumance livestock management related to conservation of vultures. Similarly, Álvaro Camiña Cardenal can be consulted on all matters concerning the conservation of vultures in Spain and in particular with regards to the impact of wind turbines on birds of prey. Financial matters are dealt with by our treasurer Wolfgang Fremuth.
