Griffon vultures in a cave
02/08/2010
Griffon vulture’s graveyard was discovered by speleologists from R. of Macedonia.
The graves are at the bottom of the cave on 41 meters depth. Near the cave there was a Griffon colony that is abandoned at the moment.
The griffon vultures are at the bottom of the cave on 41 meters deepness. The bodies are complete- whole with feathers, with no sings of injuries and violence on them. It seems like they were mummified or something. Around them there were feces from the birds, that lead us to the conclusion that they've came down here alive and stayed until their death. There were some bones from other birds.
It is very unusual that it looks like the birds came down here by themselves, stayed here for a little while and than past away. The cave is with barriers and with step construction in the hall and it is in complete dark. The inside of the cave and the bottom are completely dry so we think that is the reason way the bodies were mummified. It is impossible to discover the time of death and the presence of the corps in the cave, ocular. It is even more difficult to discover all this for the rest of the bones that are beside the corps of the Griffons.
We have requested from the experts to clarify the way of dying, are it typical for the griffons and are it normal. If it's about a phenomenon we invite you to come and together we can investigate, if that represents an interesting event for the science.
